"These fireworks are so romantic," Daniel remarked, gazing at the chaotic display of exploding bodies on the screen.
Qin Huaibei glanced at him and gently reminded, "Those are your people."
"I know," Daniel replied nonchalantly, looking back at him. "It's not like this is my first day being this bad."
Qin Huaibei pondered for a moment and realized Daniel had a point.
Meanwhile, Chloe, for whom this firework display was dedicated, curiously leaned closer to the screen. Her gaze fixed intently on Xavier's smooth, silky hair ends.
She stared for a good ten seconds without averting her eyes.
Xavier finally felt a bit confused and asked, "What are you looking at?"
Chloe pointed at the crimson bloodstains on the ends of his hair and sincerely advised:
"Your hair is dirty."
Xavier: "..."
He took a deep breath and finally said, "On the battlefield, it's unavoidable."
In such special circumstances, obsessive cleanliness becomes a thing of the past.
Xavier couldn't help but wonder if his daughter thought he would go to the frontlines wrapped in layers upon layers of protection.
"Oh, I see," Chloe responded indifferently after hearing his explanation, and then asked, "Are we at war with the Werewolf Race?"
Xavier lowered his gaze and dusted off his shoulder: "Not a full-scale war."
"This time, the Werewolf Race is in the wrong. The Wolf King has basically allowed us to massacre the research institute without interference."
Hearing this, Chloe felt something was amiss:
"Isn't the research institute considered a scientific stronghold for a race? How could they let us raze it to the ground so casually?"
If that were the case, she wondered if she could use this incident as an excuse to summon the Wolf King and slap him twice successfully.
Perhaps because Chloe's expression was too easy to read, Xavier frowned and lightly scolded, "Focus. What nonsense are you thinking about now?"
Chloe shifted her wandering gaze back, feeling slightly guilty: "So, answer my question, dear daddy."
Someone seemed to be calling for Xavier. The youthful-looking man turned his head to the side, covering the camera as he said something, then turned back. He opened the microphone displayed on the light screen and spoke in a steady tone:
"We've checked. Most items in this research institute have been moved out. It's basically an empty shell. Even if it's burned down, no one would care."
"Important documents, research results, even some injections, and even the personnel in the research institute weren't genuinely skilled researchers. The building is gone, people are dead, but it's no real loss for the Werewolf Race."
Hearing this, everyone's mood became difficult to describe.
Chloe felt somewhat annoyed.
This meant that the Werewolf Race had planned this kidnapping perfectly. They could bring back the Ancestor Cub while ensuring minimal losses to their own kind.
Seemingly sensing Chloe's thoughts, Xavier's expression softened slightly as he reassured her:
"Don't worry, those who bullied you will naturally face punishment. Being blown up into fireworks is their fate. As for that so-called Wolf King, even if he keeps hiding, I'll find him and make him pay dearly."
Hearing this, Chloe felt touched.
She pretended to wipe her eyes and then said with feigned sincerity: "Going to such lengths, I hope daddy doesn't find me troublesome?"
Her tone was affected and exaggerated, clearly a sarcastic remark.
However, Xavier didn't catch the sarcasm at all and took it seriously: "Never. You're my only daughter. The entire Vampire clan is at your command. No matter how outrageous your actions might be, I can always cover for you."
"Moreover, I've been wanting to slaughter that old beast of a Wolf King... for a very long time."
Xavier said the last part through gritted teeth.
It indeed seemed like a long-standing grudge.
Chloe gave an OK hand gesture, indicating she understood.
The terminal communication ended.
Chloe raised her head and saw Qin Huaibei and Daniel staring at her with dumbfounded expressions.
She frowned slightly and then threw a rabbit plush toy from beside her bed at them:
"What are you gawking at?"
Daniel caught the rabbit and said in disbelief:
"Is the Vampire Ancestor really this casual? It's true what he said, he'll cover for any outrageous thing you do?"
"What if you accidentally wipe out the entire Vampire clan? Would he still be so indulgent?"
Chloe was about to speak when she felt something cool touch her lips.
She glanced sideways and saw Anderson offering her a washed cherry.
Chloe opened her mouth to accept it. After eating, she very naturally spat the cherry pit into Anderson's hand and continued to answer Daniel and the others' questions:
"That kind of thing would never happen."
"You underestimate my father. He's been grooming me as the legitimate heir since I was little. I haven't missed any of the necessary courses. After years of immersion, unless I'm suddenly possessed by an alien one day, I wouldn't do anything you're worried about."
Chloe stretched lazily: "It's just casual talk. These words make both me and him happy, so why not say them?"
As she finished speaking, everyone suddenly understood.
After a while, Qin Huaibei muttered: "But who knows, maybe your dad really is that good to you."
"Of course," Chloe said, "I'm very good to my dad too."
Qin Huaibei thought carefully and said diplomatically: "If you say it's good, then it must be good."
As they were chatting, there was a rhythmic knock on the door.
Daniel instinctively went to open it.
The person who entered was familiar to everyone.
It was the doctor who had previously examined Chloe.
Upon seeing him, Chloe automatically sat up straight and held out her wrist, saying solemnly:
"Please examine me, sir."
This behavior surprised even the doctor.
Qin Huaibei chuckled: "Oh, I thought you didn't care about this."
Chloe rolled her eyes: "What do you know? I value my life very much."
"Alright, alright, got it."
Chloe extended her hand a bit further.
The doctor came to his senses:
"No need, Miss. I've already examined you while you were unconscious."
Hearing this, Chloe withdrew her hand and asked: "So, how am I doing now?"
The doctor only said four words: "Take your medicine regularly."
Chloe: "..."
"The way you say it, does it mean I'm beyond saving?"
Chloe turned pale with shock: "No! I'm still so young! I have so much left to accomplish, how could I just..."
"What I mean is, young miss's condition isn't serious for now. Taking medication regularly will be enough to maintain your health."
"..." Chloe pulled her foot back from the bed railing. "Oh."
Daniel snickered: "How embarrassing, huh?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Qin Huaibei kicked his good leg.
Accompanied by Daniel's cry of pain, Qin Huaibei smiled at Chloe:
"Don't worry, I've avenged you."
Daniel: "You son of a..."
Chloe had no time for their childish squabbling. She put aside her joking manner and asked with utmost seriousness:
"That injection from the Werewolf Race, what exactly was in it? With so many harmful substances, how is it possible that my body shows no negative effects at all?"
"Please, sir, tell me the truth."
A long silence fell over the room.
After a while, a sigh echoed through the hospital room.
